Proof by Seduction by Courtney Milan

A gifted fortune-teller from a humble background, Jenny can make even the most sophisticated skeptic believe her predictions simply by batting her smoky eyelashes. Until she meets her match in Gareth Carhart, the Marquess of Blakely, a sworn bachelor and scientist. Broodingly handsome, Gareth is scandalized to discover his cousin has fallen under the spell of “Madame Esmerelda,” and vows to prove Jenny a fraud. But his unexpected attraction to her defies logic.

Grade: B+
Okay, real quick like: This is a well written story, the characters are fleshed out, and it is intelligent and FUNNY. I couldn’t help but giggle at how wonderfully written and snarky the dialogue was.

First of all let me just say how much I love a strong female character! Jenny is poor, she has several disadvantages but it never stops her from going after what she wants or doing what she feels it right. Gareth is her polar opposite, afforded riches and station from birth he is dour, quick to anger and painfully shy. Many times I was struck by the similarities to Pride and Prejudice. (Although let’s be clear, there was lots of sex and all kinds of other things you’d never find in Jane Austen’s masterpiece.)

Let me be clear here, I always seem to set out for brain candy and some porn and occasionally I come across a story that ends up owning me. This was Courtney Milan’s first book and her talent for writing shines through. I’m almost scared to read the follow-up for this book, fearful it won’t be as good.

And let me just say, the sex scenes? (And if one of you utters Fifty Shades of Grey I will throttle you with a flogger, oh wait. You’d like that. Never mind.) The sex scenes work so well in this book because there is a slow build of desire, and each one is better than the next. No easy feat. And though there are several, they never feel gratuitous or over done. At one point I nearly dropped my Kindle because of something Gareth says to Jenny in the moment that has got to be the hottest bit of dialogue I have ever read. Damn my bullet-proof kink, but dirty talk is… Yeah. I think it’s someone putting themselves out there and asking for something that does it for me. It goes to the heart of intimacy and trust. Yeah. Damn.

I loved it from beginning to end. It did have some pacing problems and a fair bit of navel gazing from all the characters, but I expect that from a romance and it did not hinder my enjoyment. The ending was satisfying, if a bit rushed and not very realistic. All that is made up for with well written secondary characters and a truly smart story.
